Controversies Generated by the Use of Antibiotics in the Treatment of Strep Throat

Controversies Generated by the Use of Antibiotics in the Treatment of Strep Throat

Unlike the very common sore throat, caused by infection with flu-viruses, strep throat is caused by infection with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria and is usually more severe. For decades, the primary choice of medications in the treatment of strep throat has consisted in antibiotics.Although at first penicillin was the main antibiotic medication to be prescribed to patients with strep throat, nowadays stronger antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin are generally preferred over penicillin derivates. The reason why the treatment of strep throat nowadays requires the use of stronger antibiotics is that most bacterial strains have evolved and have developed increased resistance to old-fashioned antibiotics such as penicillin due to inappropriate treatment.Even at present, the exact following of the doctor's directions regarding the use of antibiotics plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency of the treatment. In case the treatment with antibiotics is prematurely interrupted or the doctor-recommended dose of medications is not respected, infections with streptococcus bacteria can recur, becoming even more resistant.Regardless of the types of antibiotics involved, the use of such medications in the treatment of strep throat has been contested by most physicians in the last few years. The majority of medical scientists believe that the use of antibiotics in the treatment of strep throat should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. They claim that antibiotics produce a variety of side-effects that render such medications inappropriate for treating strep throat in children and elderly people. Most doctors only recommend the use of antibiotics in case of severe throat infections that may also be associated with complications (acute rheumatic fever, tonsillitis, otitis); however, if the symptoms of strep throat are mild and there are no signs of complications, then antibiotics shouldn't be used at all.Traditionally, antibiotics were used in the treatment of strep throat in order to prevent the occurrence of acute rheumatic fever (ARF), complication associated with streptococcus bacteria infections.Even if antibiotics weren't 100 percent effective in overcoming strep throat, they had the major attribute of preventing the occurrence of rheumatic fever, condition that often resulted in the patients' death. However, the incidence of rheumatic fever among patients with strep throat has dramatically decreased over the years, and doctors claim that rheumatic fever is no longer a matter of concern at present.Rheumatic fever has become an extremely rare condition and the isolated cases of ARF registered in the last few years had nothing to do with strep throat, as they involved patients without any recent or past experience of the disease.More elaborate studies have concluded that ARF can no longer be associated with strep throat, as even in the absence of treatment the risks for strep throat patients to develop ARF are equivalent to zero.Although antibiotics are known to be very unsafe, producing pronounced side-effects on long-term use, the efficiency of such medications in fighting the bacteria responsible for causing strep throat is still a debatable matter.Viewed through the perspective of their effectiveness in curing strep throat, antibiotics have always generated controversial opinions among the medical community. While early medical studies conducted in the 50's had suggested that antibiotics were unable to produce substantial improvements in strep throat symptoms, a series of studies conducted in the mid 80's had indicated the opposite. In order to clarify whether antibiotics are efficient or not in producing complete recovery from strep throat, medical scientists continued the series of studies and have recently concluded that the efficiency of such medications is strongly influenced by a series of factors such as. the age of the patient, the patient's past experience with strep throat, as well as inadequate use of antibiotics (self-medication, under-treatment, discontinuous treatment, etc).Considering the fact that antibiotics can produce serious side-effects (weaken the immune system by destroying the benign bacterial flora along with the harmful bacteria, can cause digestive disorders, can increase one's risk of developing fungal infections, etc) and have variable efficiency in fighting the microorganisms responsible for causing strep throat, such medications are best to be avoided in the treatment of uncomplicated forms of strep throat.

And I Thought Yacht Racing Was Boring!

And I Thought Yacht Racing Was Boring!

'Mummy, this is really exciting!' screeched a little girl on Plymouth Hoe, clearly surprised to find herself totally enthralled by.A yacht race of all things. She can't have been older than eight and had obviously been an unwilling participant in the fever which gripped Plymouth in the lead up to the second leg of the 34th America's Cup World Series. She had clearly been dragged up to The Hoe, reluctant and sullen of face, by parents determined to make sure she witnessed history in the making. They doubtless reasoned that she'd thank them for the precious memory some distant day in adulthood.I didn't exactly have to be dragged along but I went somewhat reluctantly - just because I felt I should. It was an historic event and I pride myself on being in the thick of things whenever anything momentous happens in Plymouth.I figured I could watch a few minutes of the race start, just so I could say I'd been there, then I could retire with impunity to one of the temporary cocktail bars which had been installed on The Hoe for this great occasion.I know nothing about yachts and don't particularly wish to.As for yacht racing - well, it's always seemed to me to be on a par with cricket. In others words, akin to watching paint dry. That little girl and I couldn't have been more surprised by the sheer spectacle which exploded before us in Plymouth Sound. It was quite simply one of the most thrilling things I've ever seen in my life.Did I really just say that about a yacht race?!Gone are the days when America's Cup racers pottered along at a tame 12 miles per hour, processing regally (but not in the least bit dramatically) in a fairly orderly line, rarely overtaking each other. This new breed of hi-tech, high speed catamarans have transformed the America's Cup into a totally captivating and chaotic cross between Formula 1 and powerboat racing. They seem to literally fly above the water at speeds of more than 30 miles an hour, with Navy Seals (acting as umpires) struggling to keep up with them on jet skis. They collide with each other, capsize to rapturous roars from the crowd, and generally supply enough thrills and spills for the most avid of adrenalin junkies.Three helicopters swoop, duck and dive above the racers, beaming live pictures back to the giant screen on The Hoe.With 14 microphones and four cameras on each boat, every command and curse from the catapulting catamarans is captured to the delight of spectators.Hi-tech digital coverage of the race gives onlookers a feel of almost being in the front row of a 3D movie theatre. It's scintillating sailing at its best and the extraordinary images are transmitted live over the internet and to TV channels across the globe. The world's fastest boats, best sailors and one of the most stunning natural sports stadiums on the planet combined to make this second event in the America's Cup World Series a unique and unforgettable experience. The American commentators admitted to being completely overwhelmed by the sheer size of the crowd which packed The Hoe for the first day's racing in Plymouth.More than 10,000 people - from toddlers to pensioners - turned out despite grey skies, gusting winds and occasional torrential downpours.Of course Plymouth can boast something totally unique which even beautiful San Francisco Bay (which will host the America's Cup finals in 2013) can't match.Plymouth Sound is one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and it makes an ideal amphitheater for major seaborne spectacles with Plymouth Hoe providing the perfect outdoor spectator gallery.Even with 10,000 spectators amassed on The Hoe, on the breakwater at Mount Batten and on the clifftop overlooking The Sound's eastern edge, there was no sense of overcrowding or jockeying for the best vantage positions. There were fantastic views to be had for miles on end.Small wonder Plymouth has been chosen to host some of the biggest sporting events in the world including the start of the Transat (the single-handed trans-Atlantic race). And when you're watching these extraordinary events you can't help but be stirred by thoughts of those giants of history who set sail from these same shores - Sir Francis Drake, Captain Cook, Sir Walter Raleigh and Charles Darwin to name but a few.

Why I *Probably* Won't Be Playing Diablo III

    Why I *Probably* Won

It's been nearly twelve years since I first played Diablo II and longer still since I first played the classic that is the original Diablo.Since then, I've been chomping at the bit for more. The first Diablo still ranks as one of my favorite games of all time.Although, Diablo II was damn good it still fell short of the masterpiece that was the first installment of Diablo.Even with the innovations and changes it introduced to the franchise and while it was still a great game, it never captured the atmosphere and memorable moments the way Diablo had. This made the announcement of Diablo III, a sequel twelve years in the making, not only exciting but very intriguing.I could only fathom what Blizzard had in store for Diablo III after all these years; would it more closely resemble Diablo II with its wide open environments or would the series return to its roots and drag you under ground to the very pits of hell?Prior to the first rumors about Diablo III surfacing, I admittedly hadn't thought all that much about Diablo for many years. It seems as though neither had Blizzard, considering they seemed to be preoccupied with their money tree, World of Warcraft.Although they did get around to finally releasing Starcraft II, albeit, it too took 12 years to complete. That's not to say that it wasn't well worth the wait. When the first tidbits about Diablo III were released I was excited, to say the least.Memories of exploring catacombs, casting firewalls, running from The Butcher and getting ripped off by Wart in the town of Tristram all came flooding back.I heard rumblings of a private Beta and before I knew it the Beta had been made public and I completely missed the opportunity to play it, of no fault but my own I must admit.Still I was consumed with excitement as Diablo III's release date grew closer.Diablo III is one of, if not, the most anticipated game Blizzard has ever released.Evidenced by its pre-order sales being the largest for a PC game in Amazon's history. On top of that, the Beta hosted 2 million people, who logged on to play it over the weekend it was available.Clearly I'm far from alone in my fever-like excitement for the next installment in the Diablo series.Unfortunately, this only serves to exacerbate the gut punch when I learned that Diablo III would require a constant internet connection in order to play it.Yeahbuhwhy?! I asked myself again and again. My knee jerk reaction was to assume that Blizzard was simply jumping on the bandwagon with Ubisoft and butchering their own game to prevent its resale. However, Blizzard claims this wasn't their motivation. While I'm skeptical, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The big wigs at Blizzard explained that their motivation for requiring an internet umbilical cord is not related to DRM(digital rights management) at all.And unless I missed it, Blizzard is not requiring any sort of online pass for people who buy the game used so thankfully that isn't their motivation either.Blizzard reasons that because your character will be saved on their server, Battle.Net, if they didn't require a constant online connection to play then your single player character could not be used on multiplayer servers. This would force you to create a completely new character for online play.Quite honestly, I don't think that's such a big deal.Especially considering that's exactly how the original Diablo was.In the original Diablo, you're given the option play solo or online with friends. The fact that you have to create separate characters to do so doesn't diminish the experience. If anything, it potentially adds to it.Consider the five character classes you have to choose from.Save for the Barbarian, there are no returning character classes so no matter which class you pick you have a completely new experience to look forward to.What's to stop you from having a Wizard as your single player character and a Demon Hunter as your multiplayer character or whatever combination you see fit?Blizzard references World of Warcraft (WoW) to support their argument.Their claim is that the practice of requiring a constant online connection has been around for years, so why the fuss? There are quite a few holes in their argument though.WoW is a Mass Multiplayer Online game and people are therefore expected to have a constant online connection.Where as, when playing a single player campaign it feels unnecessary to need to be online. Not to mention, you'd be hard pressed to find even the most causal WoW players having only a single character, and restraining themselves to only one server no less.Another argument is from the stand point of eliminating hacks from the game; a worthy ambition. But can an internet umbilical cord really prevent the problem? Doesn't World of Warcraft still have its fair share of problems with dupes and hacks despite requiring a constant internet connection? If you Google 'WoW gold/items 4 cash websites', the list goes on for hours.Essentially you can pay "X" amount of money for "X" amount of gold or weapons or mounts, specifically ones that don't 'Bind on Pick-Up' or 'Bind on Account.'.As stated earlier, I've reigned in the majority of my initial disappointment. However, I definitely won't be waiting in line at midnight to snag a copy of Diablo III when it's released, nor will I feel that I'm missing out on something great by not doing so.Perhaps, one day I'll breakdown and decide to play Diablo III.Especially if they reintroduce the Necromancer into the series.Short of that, I'd sooner dust off a copy of Diablo or Diablo II and one night, when my internet is down, be reminded why I loved those games so much.

Is a Fever Blister Or Cold Sore Contagious?

Is a Fever Blister Or Cold Sore Contagious?

Many people do not know that they have contracted the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) until they experience their first outbreak of cold sores. When they do have an active outbreak, they might not realize what is causing it.In this case, the carrier of the herpes virus might go on touching the cold sores or fever blisters as he or she probes the infection. The virus might then get transmitted to other parts of the body and to other people if he or she touches them. Not knowing that one has the virus, one can get careless and start spreading the virus to others. It is therefore very important to know the stages of cold sores and how contagious the herpes virus is.STAGES There are three stages of contagious cold sores or fever blisters - the early stage (prodrome), the middle stage (weeping stage) and the last stage (healing). The symptoms of the early or 'prodrome' stage are. an itching, tingling or burning sensation in the lips or area wherein the sore will soon develop and a series of tiny blisters surrounded by a red area.In the middle stage or weeping stage, the fever blisters break open, weep and dry out, forming a yellow scab or crust. The final stage or healing stage happens when the fever blister has nearly healed and there is a red spot remaining on the skin. Then, anywhere from 2 to 14 days, the healthy pink skin replaces the red spot and he or she is finally healed.CONTAGION At the first sign of an outbreak (prodrome stage), the virus is already active and anyone who comes into contact with the affected area risks being infected. But it is at the stage where the fever blisters start to ooze (weeping stage) that cold sores or fever blisters become highly contagious. The blisters burst, releasing fluid that contains millions of virus particles with the sole purpose of infecting other nerve cells.Every precaution should be done to avoid directly touching the cold sores at this point.Even after the blisters have scabbed over, the risk of transmitting the virus is relatively higher than normal.A person is still contagious until the red spot fades and healthy pink tissue has replaced the original cold sore or fever blister. The 'prodrome' stage and the healing stage are actually the stages where the carrier might unknowingly spread the virus to other people.Since there is no significant skin trauma at these stages, people forget that they have contagious cold sores or fever blisters.Children usually get infected by the virus by relatives who kiss them without knowing that they are about to have an active outbreak.Coming in direct contact with the cold sores is the most common cause of contracting the herpes virus. But the spread of the virus is not limited to this process. There are also risks in acquiring the virus by sharing items that directly touch the cold sores.A handkerchief that has been wiped over the contagious cold sores or fever blisters can carry virus particles that could be transferred to the person who borrows it.Sharing a cup or a glass with someone who has a cold sore outbreak might also result in a person acquiring the virus.PREVENTION It is then a wise idea to observe proper hygiene, like washing hands often, when around people with contagious cold sores or fever blisters.Do not share cups or utensils with people who may be infected and refrain from physical contact with them until they are completely healed.By knowing the stages of contagious cold sores or fever blisters and the methods of prevention, he or she may more effectively keep from spreading the HSV-1 Virus and more hopefully, keep from ever contracting the virus in the first place. If you already have the HSV-1 Virus there may be ways to control outbreaks by stopping contagious cold sores or fever blisters before they start.

Donated Auction Items - Free Tickets to 2009 World Series?

Ok, being from New York City, maybe that's just my own personal hope. With game 6 of the World Series fast approaching, many around the world are truly obsessed with baseball.Whether it is football, soccer, basketball, hockey, or cricket, when those seasons come around, we all know someone who gets the sports fever.People will do anything, even the unspeakable, to get tickets to big sports events. How can we capitalize on this infatuation at charity auctions?Maybe you can't get World Series tickets, but maybe you could get box seats to a minor league team in your area.Minor league sports teams are more likely to donate premium tickets and may offer a tour and a chance to meet a player. Many of the amateurs are only part-time players and are more open to publicity, really enjoying their new-found celebrity status.Even though they are minor-leaguers and more accessible to the fans, some go on to professional sports and become well-known.You may be able to acquire an individually signed ball from a major league team, but it may be easier to obtain a ball signed by the entire team in the minor leagues. If packaged with premium tickets to the game, and possibly a tour, it enhances the value of the item to the potential bidder. There are so many ways to do this.Just be creative.Besides just tickets, there are opportunities that may be donated, such as riding a Zamboni at a hockey game, sitting with a sports announcer at a game, throwing out a pitch, singing the national anthem, getting a personal announcement at a game, a phone call from a prominent player, getting to be a bat-boy or ball-boy, or sitting with the players. The ideas are endless and they are all unique, one of a kind experiences for the sports enthusiast.

    Chart

View this chart to learn more about what the numbers mean.

    What the Numbers Mean
Understanding your readings is easy with the Omron 7 SERIES blood pressure monitor. The easy-to-read screen displays your readings in large font and labels each number with a tab along the side.

Systolic Pressure is the top number on the display. It's the pressure created as your heart contracts to pump blood throughout the body.

Diastolic Pressure is the bottom number on the display. It's the pressure between beats, when your heart relaxes.
These numbers combine to give you your blood pressure reading (systolic over diastolic pressure).

    How to Monitor + Tips
Your blood pressure numbers often change. For instance, your blood pressure in the morning can be significantly different than at night, when you visit a doctor's office, or after exercising. By using an Omron blood pressure monitor at home, you're able to detect changes in your blood pressure any time you want.

    Monitoring at Home is Easy
To ensure an accurate reading, do not measure your blood pressure within 30 minutes of:

    • Exercising
    • Eating
    • Smoking
    • Drinking Alcohol
    • Bathing
Place the blood pressure arm cuff on your left arm and sit quietly for approximately five minutes with both feet flat on the floor. Then, when you are ready to test, simply press the start button and the Omron monitor will do the rest.
